JASON — "The deadline moved up this year — 53 players by 6 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 30, not the Tuesday we are used to. Anyone with fewer than four accrued seasons hits waivers, claims are due by 1 p.m. EDT Monday, August 31, and only then can Buffalo start building a 16-man practice squad, with a possible 17th spot for Travis Clayton through the IPP."
JR. — "That waiver step is the whole ballgame, nephew. You do not get to stash whoever you like — 31 other teams get a window at your developmental players first. So you keep the men who can help you right now: versatility, special teams, guys who know the system. It is not the 16 best cuts. It is the 16 most useful."
JASON — "Pushback, though — the projections might not survive Monday. The early list has names like Shane Buechele, Ian Wheeler, Trent Sherfield and Keleki Latu, but some have to clear waivers first, a veteran can choose another opportunity, and Buffalo could end up claiming somebody cut elsewhere."
JR. — "Which is why you build the list with roles, not favorites. Quarterback, runner, tight end, line depth, special teams — you keep men who can answer more than one question, because once the season starts that squad is part developmental program and part emergency supply."
THE POINT — "Cut day is not goodbye, it is triage. Build the 53 for opening day, then build the 16 for the long season — and assume the rest of the league is watching both."
JR. & JASON — "Nephew, most of those jobs are already earned — the general manager said it himself, the 53 was set in stone with about three spots truly in play when the Steelers came to town. The preseason finale was not an open audition, it was a tiebreaker. Jason's watching the bubble, and the last chairs go to the men who fill more than one role."
JASON — "The facts: Buffalo has until 6 p.m. EDT Sunday to get down to 53, and the process started Saturday with the release of veteran receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. and incumbent punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Brandon Beane said before the finale that only about three roster spots were up for grabs against Pittsburgh."
JR. — "That is how a real front office works. By the final preseason week the board is nearly finished and only a handful of names are still moving. A Thursday night home win over the Steelers was never going to rewrite it — it only settles the jobs that were still tied."
JASON — "Devil's advocate: if the roster was truly set in stone, why is every beat writer in town publishing a different projection this weekend? Somebody's bubble guy — Frank Gore Jr., Ian Wheeler, Kani Walker — is about to prove the room wrong."
JR. — "Because the last few jobs are about fit, not talent. Preseason standouts like Gore Jr., Wheeler and Walker made their cases — now it comes down to how many offensive and defensive linemen Beane keeps and who covers kicks. That is roster math, and it is cold."
THE POINT — "The finale did not open jobs, it closed arguments. Hardman and Wishnowsky were the first cuts, and the final seats go to the most versatile men left standing."
JR. & JASON — "Here is how a good general manager plays the board, son. A third-string center who lost his backup job to a veteran with 80 games of starting experience was likely getting cut — instead, Brandon Beane turned him into a 2027 sixth-round pick, with a seventh going back the other way. It is the 13th August trade of his tenure. Jason has the particulars, and they are textbook."
JASON — "The particulars, per Tom Pelissero: Sedrick Van Pran-Granger goes to the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo receives a 2027 sixth-round pick, and the Bills send back a 2027 seventh-rounder. Van Pran-Granger was a fifth-round pick in 2024 out of Georgia and lost the backup center job to Lloyd Cushenberry III this summer."
JR. — "That is the going rate for a player on the fringe — a man plus a future seventh for a future sixth. Folks will shrug at it. They should not. The alternative was releasing a player likely to be cut and getting nothing, and centers who know your system always have a market."
JASON — "Devil's advocate, though — it is only a future sixth-rounder, essentially the lowest-cost price a player carries in a trade. Cushenberry has 80 games of starting experience and won the job outright, so the room did not get weaker. Is this more than bookkeeping?"
JR. — "Bookkeeping is how rosters survive August. Beane has now made 13 August trades in Buffalo, five of them on August 30 — this is a man who works the margins every single year. A pick in hand beats a waiver claim on hope. BOOM. That is the lesson."
THE POINT — "Something always beats nothing for a player you were about to cut. The Colts get center depth, Buffalo gets a lottery ticket, and the board keeps moving."
JR. & JASON — "Easy with this one, nephew — it is smoke, not fire. Mike Danna's name is circulating as a potential trade or release candidate because Buffalo's edge group is crowded, and the practice-squad math only includes him if he is not traded. Nothing is confirmed by anyone. Jason will lay out what is actually being said, and then we grade the smoke."
JASON — "Here is everything I have: with final cuts due Sunday, Danna has been mentioned as a potential trade or release candidate, and the thinking is that if Beane can find a trade partner, getting something in return makes more sense than simply releasing him and hoping he is available afterward. That is the whole file."
JR. — "And that is a front office thinking out loud, not a done deal. A crowded edge group means somebody with real experience is the odd man out. The leverage lives in the phone call — a trade brings something back, a release brings nothing but hope."
JASON — "The pushback writes itself, though — mentioned as a candidate is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Nobody with the team has confirmed a thing, his situation may never reach the practice squad at all, and the projection lists him only with the caveat if not traded."
JR. — "Which is exactly why this sits at light smoke. The logic is sound — something back beats nothing — but logic is not a signature. Until the phone rings, Danna is a Bill in a crowded position group with an uncertain Sunday."
THE POINT — "Grade it chatter. A move makes football sense, but there is no confirmation anywhere in this file, and cut day answers it either way."
JR. & JASON — "While Bills Mafia argues over the final cuts, son, the league is about to hand Brandon Beane a catalog. Hundreds of players come off the other 31 rosters this weekend, and some of them will fit Buffalo better than the men the Bills just spent the summer developing. Jason, tell them why the first practice squad is never just our own camp cuts."
JASON — "The mechanics: once Buffalo's cuts go through waivers and claims are processed at 1 p.m. EDT Monday, the Bills can start assembling their practice squad — but the other 31 teams are releasing hundreds of players this weekend, and Beane and his staff will be watching all of it."
JR. — "That is the part folks miss. You spend all summer grading your own camp, and cut day doubles the board overnight. A player you liked coming out of college, a veteran at a position where you need depth — they hit the wire with no warning, and the good scouting departments already have the grades stacked."
JASON — "Devil's advocate: if another team's castoff were better than your camp guy, why did that team cut him? Most of the wire is players the league already graded down. And Buffalo could just as easily lose one of its own — another club can sign anyone off the practice squad, as long as it is to their active roster."
JR. — "Sure, and that cuts both ways — which is exactly why you do the work. The first practice squad of the year is not made up entirely of your own training-camp cuts. Some of it belongs to players you liked in the draft process who fit your roster better than the man you spent the summer developing."
THE POINT — "Cut day is not the end of roster building, it is the league's biggest restock. The staff that already graded everyone else's roster eats best this weekend."
